Canada needs to start dumping its $459 billion in treasuries. Or, how about introducing a new tax on mail-order prescription drugs like insulin. Based on my research, many Americans buy prescription drugs through mail-order or online pharmacies from Canada to access more affordable medications since they have no price controls in the US.

It’s time to think-outside-the-box and consider different forms of retaliation

Johnny Goodham's avatar

Taxing prescription drugs to Americans being gouged by their Big Pharma. We fight hard, we are not evil. Getting rid of treasuries, on the other hand ......

Mike Ramsay's avatar

Agree, but not insulin. Each and every vanity drug, though.

All of this pressure and money woes only ends up effecting the consumer, working class.

This is all magic tricks to keep pushing the agenda of increased costs for the daily and then crushing the middle class, or what remains.

Canada really has nothing much to stand on.

American oil companies run the show in Canada.

American corporations run the show on most levels.

Plantir is running the show for most law enforcement.

Canada is the 51st state, the people just have not woken up yet and maybe never will.

Canada has no gold to back its currency.

Canada is a resource colony.

Canada is saturated with American corporations harvesting said resources. Carney relies on those American corporations to run his country and steal from the people.

Raoul Christensen's avatar

Canada might be “a resource colony,” but it's also a resource coloniser and exploiter of Latin America and Africa, with Canadian mining companies raping and pillaging, those continents mineral resources.

Tim N's avatar

Canada has no gold to back its currency? So what?

CT's avatar

This adds to the fact Canada has very little to stand on.

So money needs a backing.

Canada backs its currency with resources. Resources that are being extracted by mostly foreign entities at horrible deals for Canadians.

Canada is tied to the US dollar on a large majority.

When the US dollar and its system crashes, where does Canada stand? It falls with the US dollar.

If Canada had gold to back its currency there would be reasonable assumptions from the world investors that Canada can still weather the storm and have buying power.

Currently, as mentioned, Canada is a resource hub, selling off all its gold and other raw resources to the highest bidder or the corporations that have lucrative contracts in Canada to extract resources at low prices. We dont manufacture much on any higher tier. We sell resources to other nations who then refine or manufacture a product and sell it back to Canada.

Also worth noting, Canada is the only G7 country with zero gold to back its currency.

So to summarize, gold makes a difference.

Look at China, the largest investor in gold, which is giving China more buying power and ability to weather financial uncertainty, among other benefits.

Tim N's avatar

So, Canada issues its own currency, and its economic background is sound. That's what gives it's currency value, not gold to back it up. If you were right, and Canada has no gold to back up it's currency, then Canada should be flaming out by now. It doesn't need gold to "back up" it's currency, no more than the US does. There is no gold-backed currency in the world today.

areti spiropoulos's avatar

And yet countries all over the world buy and hold gold. I wonder why. I also wonder why investors urge holding gold and other precious metals not paper currencies.

Tim N's avatar

Countries and individuals buy and sell gold. Okay, so what? Its a good thing no currencies depend on gold, because there's a finite amount of gold in the world. And, who is actually holding the physical gold? Most "investors" simply have documents that reference the gold; the actual gold is Somewhere Else.

CT's avatar

We are not talking about the lower level transactions of Canada. We are talking about the investments of large corporations/countries into Canada and its infrastructure/resources. These investments are backed by a long standing relation, reserve numbers, etc. If you add a holding of gold, an asset all countries need and want, this gives stability through hard times. Leverage at a higher level.

You are not a country and can't operate like one. You do not have natural resources to sell, corporate investments, infrastructure to facilitate transport of resources, etc. If another country has an investment in Canada and they see thst the country, its people, economy, are failing, you sell. If thst country HSS holdings of assets that help balance the sheets and secure the country in a rough time, you are less likely to sell.

If you are a paper/reference gold investor, you should see the value. And we are not talking about your barely visible monthly investments the average Canadian makes in gold or futures.

Kathleen McCroskey's avatar

Right. Metalist monetary theory sucks - gold has value in manufacturing, all else is illusionary.

areti spiropoulos's avatar

It means it's up shite creek without a paddle when not if the economy crashes.

School is in and the lesson will commence, starting with civics and eminent domain. There are a lot of levers to pull to manage our situation. Those oil companies will obey. As an industry they’ve demonstrated through two world wars they obey whoever holds the keys to the flow and they’ll do everything to keep it flowing. They’re never allies, but they’re predictably compliant to the jurisdiction they’re in.

Michel Rocheleau's avatar

Canada needs to start sharing the incredible wealth of natural resources with the citizens. The poverty, the level of taxes imposed it’s unbelievably high. And If Canada wants to retaliate it should start to stop funding the war in Ukraine and Israel.

The oil production in Canada is own by US corporations. The leverage is very limited unless drastic measures is taken… the type of measures Carney will never do.

Sarel Van Der Walt's avatar

At present, Canada doesn’t have the necessary infrastructure capacity to divert oil exports from US to Asia or Europe. It will take a few years for the infrastructure to be built & become operational.

Also, how much of refined oil products are imported from US to Canada? Surely, if Canada restricts crude exports to US, US might restrict exports of refined products from US to Canada. It’s of little value to Canada to have surplus crude oil, but shortage of diesel, jet fuel, gas, etc which is absolutely necessary for the Canadian economy.

Canada is run by smart, pragmatic people- they will not unnecessarily damage their own industries & economy just because they are angry at US & Trump. But they will also continue to build infrastructure & institutions to minimise any impact from the trade war with the US, including building more refining capacity in Canada, importing latest tech EV from Asia, etc.

"Oh Canada - We Stand On Guard for Thee". Thank-you Ben! As the WW1 veterans inscribed in granite on the EAST window of Peace Tower on Parliament Hill: "He (Christ) shall have dominion also from sea to sea" Psalm 72:8. which is also our Canadian motto. In the Almighty Name of Yahweh Yeshua - His Majesty King Jesus the Christ - Eternal Passover Lamb of God - I stand in the gap for The Dominion of Canada and decree that Psalm 72:8 will be engraved in the hearts and minds of Canadian citizens, immigrants, and refugees so that we will be victorious in this trade war with President Trump and that The Dominion of Canada will NOT be raped and enslaved by the USA now or at anytime.

The Dominion of Canada is the only nation with a leaf on her flag. Prophetically Canada is destined to be IN CHRIST NOT BABYLON and bring healing to the nations (Rev 22.2).

Revelation 22:1-4. NLT: "Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 It flowed down the center of the main street. <><><>On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.<><><> 3 No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. 4 And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads.

But Canadians must repent and come out of Babylon = worldliness, be your own god, and blood-drunk (Rev 17:6). N.T Revelation 13, 16-19 = O.T. Daniel 2, 7. THE BOOKS on every human are in The COURT OF HEAVEN will soon be opened as in Daniel 7 and Rev 20. The terrorizing blasphemous "little horn" Antichrist beast empire who declared "WAR ON THE SAINTS" (also Satan-possessed beast with 7 heads and 10 horns in Rev 13) will be destroyed by God first (Daniel 7: 11). The other beast empires will be given an extension of life (Daniel 7:12), {to repent and worship only the Eternal Godhead Holy Trinity: Yahweh Father God, Son-Word-Creator-sacrificed Lamb Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit.

SHEEP OR GOAT? Matthew 25: 31-46. Every nation & human must CHOOSE to serve under His Majesty King Jesus the Christ who reigns over the Kingdom of Light in all the Universes He created (Hebrews 1:1-3) or Satan aka Lucifer/Rev 12 dragon/Genesis 3 serpent who has reigned over the Kingdom of Darkness on Earth since given the dominion keys by fallen Adam who was expelled with wife Eve from the Garden with the Christ-Tree of Eternal Life. Gen 3:15 TWO SEEDS. Satan or promised Messiah Christ.

The U.S. trade war with Canada appears less about fixing a genuine trade imbalance more about advancing the administration’s broader effort to pressure Canada and challenge its economic independence.

In 2025, the United States had a goods-and-services trade deficit with Canada of roughly $18 billion. But energy accounts for much of that imbalance. The U.S. imported about $111 billion in energy from Canada while exporting roughly $26 billion, leaving an energy deficit of about $85 billion. Excluding energy products, the U.S. had a trade surplus with Canada of $67 billion.

And there is an important reason for that energy imbalance. Canada supplies enormous quantities of heavy crude oil, which is often less expensive than lighter crude and is particularly well suited to many U.S. refineries. Those refineries were designed or upgraded to process heavy crude.  Some of those refined products are then sold throughout the United States and exported around the world.  Canadian crude isn’t simply a cost to the United States—it is a valuable input into a highly profitable U.S. refining industry.

If Canada wanted to retaliate, they could impose large export duties on oil shipped to the United States .  Canada supplied  over 60% of U.S. imported crude.  A major price increase could put upward pressure on the prices of diesel, jet fuel, asphalt and other petroleum products.

The United States and Canada have one of the most deeply integrated energy systems in the world. Trump is too narrow-minded and petty to see the trading benefits for both countries.

If push gets to shove not only crude oil will be cut off but the rare and precious minerals will no longer be for sale to the USA. The Canadians know how to jam someone "up against the boards" and are willing to do so..

"These investments are backed by a long standing relation, reserve numbers, etc." Yes, what I was driving at. I'm not a country? I sure am not. If I was, I could print money and issue currency, among other things.

I heard we also insisted that the Canadian's raise their hands and ask us for permission when they need to use the restroom.

Canada doesn't need to put up with Trump's nasty dealings. Tell Trump to f*** off and sell Canadian oil to China or whoever else wants it. That'll larn'em!

The Firestarter in Chief, once again, weaves his magical wand… (wrong wand)… and starts yet another fire. Maybe, his underlings will mark which wand does what and use the international wand colour coding… to their master out… or would that be too much trouble for them, or would they consider that task beneath them?

There is no truth in Politics.

Only bullshit.

Trump and Carney are at the wailing wall in Israel in a pissing contest.

The only difference is that Carneys prostate gland is younger than Trumps.

Canada should stop al export of oil gas and rare earth minerals to USA and put at least 50 % tariffs on all other products USA is broke and deeply in debt 40.000 billion dollars They are in conflict with most of the world and at war with Iran and also Russia via Ukraine Trumps threats are empty threats USA don’t have any power left and they lose all their tariffs threats Most of them is illegal and they are forced to pay the money back

Howard Feldman's avatar

The trade war with Canada continues to escalate. Trump announces a 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods. Canada immediately retaliates with the nuclear option: an indefinite suspension of all Canadian bacon shipments to the United States.

Negotiations are expected to resume shortly.
