Following anti-colonial coups, the US and France threaten intervention to re-install a pro-Western regime in Niger, which produces uranium needed for nuclear energy and hosts strategic US drone bases.
Great reporting Ben! So WW lll is escalating and it really is all about imperialism/colonialism whether it is Russia, China or West Africa. Ukraine is chapter one, with more to follow. The Western powers are putting on a stellar display of their greed, sociopathy and total contempt for the world community.
Thanks for this reporting. There’s a lot to unpack when it comes to military involvement in power taking, let alone social / economic justice movements; glad it affords some context here.
The Intercept reporter quoted here spoke this week on Democracy Now about how human rights were compromised under the elected government, and so how that translates into popular support for the coup. Other sources, such as Geopolitical Economy, report on the food security issues, vz. Russia / Ukraine, and how these factor into the consideration of Niger’s new leaders in breaking from neocolonial ties. The complexity, fluidity, and volatility of the situation daunt analytical comprehension but this piece helps give historical perspective.
Fantastic insights, thanks ! I was the only white kid at Achimota primary school in 1966 in Ghana when Kwame Nkrumah was shot, and remember wearing a tee shirt printed with a red crime scene body on the floor shape with a gun shot splat !

Superb information and context. Lots of facts and dates to support the viewpoint.

Despite writing about this myself, I learnt from your article.

US-Vizeaussenministerin Victoria Nuland ist überraschend nach Niger gereist.
Die weis wie ein Krieg ausgelöst werden kann, hat sie mit der Revolte in der Ukraine 2014 auch geschafft....
Victoria Nuland was in Niger for 2 days wagging her finger at their Foreign Minister but it didn't scare them.
Just a side note. Isn’t de-industrialisation in Germany a good thing, for climate change and perhaps anti-capitalism.
I appreciate your reporting!
