From Mankind's earliest time on this planet, to the present day it has been necessary for human groups to provide themselves with the means for survival by regulating the organization of four components:
1) raw materials
2) labor
3) distribution of finished products (today our capitalist economists call this "the market")
4) one might want to add the fourth: money
For the contemporary situation we can look at the small book put out by the Club Of Rome in 1972, THE LIMITS TO GROWTH. It was followed up 30 years later with another report of the same title. During my years of teaching I used the original report and when the second one was published I used it also.
If you have not already read LIMITS, you can find an acceptable summary of the book on line esp. WikiPedia. The authors of LIMITS take a malthusian view of population, but do not fall victim to the misconceptions of Thomas Malthus, who was a bishop in the Church of England.
I used Malthus's 1830 edition of POPULATION in my classes. I took the time to point out that his analysis was full of understandable errors because of his religious ideology. However, he took top honors in mathematics at Cambridge and his math was right on point. His religious assumptions about human behavior and organization lead him up blind alleys. Malthus claimed that mans ability to increase his extraction of raw materials grows arithmetically, while the size of population grows exponentially.
